Oracle to acquire retail software vendor MICROS Systems for $4.6 billion

Enterprise IT vendor Oracle is set to acquire MICROS Systems, a provider of software and hardware solutions to the hospitality and retail industries, for $4.6 billion.

The acquisition of MICROS enables Oracle to extend its offerings in industries by combining MICROS’ industry specific applications with Oracle’s business applications, technologies and cloud portfolio.

The Oracle-MICROS combination will assist hotels, food & beverage facilities, and retailers to transform their businesses, and better customer experience.

Oracle President Mark Hurd said: “We anticipate delivering compelling advantages to companies within the Hospitality and Retail industries with the acquisition of MICROS.”

MICROS has been focused on helping the world’s leading brands in its target markets, including running more than 330,000 sites across 180 countries.

Reliance Industries last week said it invested in retail infrastructure to capitalize on the growing opportunity in India. RIL’s retail business grew 34 percent to Rs 14,496 crore and PBDIT of Rs 363 crore. Reliance Retail business now operates 1,691 stores covering an area of 11.7 million square feet across 146 cities in India. During the year 367 new stores were added – effectively one store every day.
