Aeromexico, Mexico’s global airline, has taken a significant step towards enhancing safety measures and operational efficiency by partnering with IBM and leveraging their Environmental Intelligence Suite.
The innovative technology, designed to monitor, anticipate, plan, and respond to the potential impact of extreme weather events on air operations, promises to benefit both customers and employees. The system, powered by Artificial Intelligence, was implemented by Xatrix, a Mexican consultancy company and an IBM Business Partner.
IBM Environmental Intelligence Suite empowers the airline to perform informed climate risk analysis and provides crucial weather information and geospatial data for its extensive network of over 100 routes, spanning Mexico and destinations around the globe.
Moreover, the system issues real-time alerts, enabling Aeromexico to consider current and anticipated weather conditions, including factors like wind, rain, and lightning, among others. These insights are instrumental in improving operational decisions, particularly in flight planning.
Extreme weather events and natural disasters have been identified as the second-most serious overall global risk in the near future, according to the Global Economic Forum’s 2023 Global Risks Report. Aeromexico’s proactive adoption of advanced technology demonstrates its commitment to addressing these challenges head-on.
Manuel Gonzalez del Yerro, Sustainability Software Leader for IBM Latin America, emphasized the significance of technology in bridging the gap between business and the environment, stating, “The future of business and the environment are deeply connected, and technology is allowing a greater understanding of climate and how it can impact businesses. For us, Aeromexico’s trust in IBM technologies to help them manage climate risk is a source of pride, putting safety measures and efficiency above all else and anticipating adverse atmospheric events.”
Diego Convalia, Aeromexico’s Vice President of Technical Flight Operations, highlighted how this technology complements the airline’s modern aircraft, experienced crews, and advanced air traffic control technologies. He explained, “This technology helps us in decisions for takeoffs, landings, flight routes, and ground operations, which contributes to elevating flying to be an extraordinary experience.”
Aeromexico is Mexico’s flagship airline, operating from its main hub at Mexico City International Airport. The airline’s extensive network encompasses destinations in Mexico, the United States, Canada, Central America, South America, Asia, and Europe. Aeromexico’s operating fleet includes Boeing 787 and 737 jet airliners, as well as Embraer 190 models. This partnership with IBM and the deployment of the Environmental Intelligence Suite underpin Aeromexico’s commitment to providing safe, efficient, and exceptional air travel experiences for its passengers while addressing the challenges posed by evolving weather conditions.
