Symantec buys Israel-based Fireglass to strengthen cyber security biz

Symantec CEO Greg ClarkCyber security company Symantec has acquired Israel-based Fireglass to strengthen its Integrated Cyber Defense Platform.

The acquisition of Fireglass will extend Symantec’s leadership in Secure Web Gateway and Email protection delivered both on premises and in the cloud. Guy Guzner is the founder and CEO of Fireglass.

Fireglass is the leading agentless isolation solution that eliminates ransomware, malware and phishing threats in real-time by preventing potentially harmful content from ever reaching user endpoints or the corporate network.

Fireglass’ approach to browser isolation substantially reduces the attack surface, strengthening an enterprise’s security posture and as a result, significantly reduces the burden on the company’s security operation center (SOC) and IT help desk.

Fireglass can protect users regardless of the links they click or the uncategorized websites they visit, eliminating the most common infiltration points for ransomware, exploits and malware.

Symantec will deliver Fireglass as a cloud service, on premises, or in a hybrid model. Users of Fireglass report dramatic reduction in problem tickets and the resulting workload of the security team.

Integrating Fireglass’ isolation technology with Symantec’s existing endpoint, email and secure web gateway solutions could reduce security events by as much as 70 percent, while virtually eliminating advanced threats spread by web browsing or email content.

“Isolation will become a core component in the design of cyber defense architectures for the cloud generation who face the reality of an encrypted Internet and the crisis inherent in email and web-delivered attacks,” said Greg Clark, Symantec CEO.

Fireglass’ isolation technology easily integrates with existing security solutions and across all forms of the endpoint including Windows, Mac, Android, iOS and all others including browser-enabled IoT devices.

Symantec in May 2017 said it blocked nearly 22 million WannaCry infection attempts across 300,000 endpoints, providing full protection for Symantec customers through its advanced exploit protection technology.

The protection of Symantec customers was enabled in part due to the integration of real-time threat intelligence shared across both Symantec Endpoint Protection and the Blue Coat ProxySG, which provided real-time threat awareness across the endpoint, network and cloud.

Symantec achieved Q4 revenue of $1.115 billion (+28 percent), while Fiscal Year 2017 revenue was $4.019 billion (+12 percent).

Symantec said its Q4 Enterprise Security segment revenue rose 40 percent, while Consumer Digital Safety segment revenue increased 13 percent.
