Palo Alto Networks leads Security Appliance market, beating Cisco

Palo Alto Networks has become the leader in security appliance market in Q4 2020 — beating Cisco Systems.

Palo Alto Networks has 15 percent share in the worldwide security appliance market in Q4 as comapared with 14.6 percent share for Cisco.

Cisco was the security appliance market leader in Q4 2019 with 15.9 percent share. Palo Alto Networks had 13.6 percent share in security appliance market in Q4 2019.

Fortinet (12.1 percent), Check Point (8.3 percent), Huawei (3.9 percent) and SonicWALL (3.3 percent) are the other leading suppliers in the global security appliance market for the fourth quarter of 2020.

Fortinet has increased its share in security appliance market to 12.1 percent from 11.1 percent.

Check Point has lost its share in security appliance market to 8.3 percent from 9.5 percent.

Huawei has increased its share to 3.9 percent from 3.1 percent in security appliance market.

SonicWALL has increased its share to 3.3 percent from 3.8 percent in the global security appliance market.

Revenue in the security appliance market grew 11.3 percent year over year and 15 percent quarter over quarter in the fourth quarter of 2020 (4Q20), according to IDC report.
Security market share 2020Security Appliance market revenue totaled $5.3 billion, an increase of $538 million from the fourth quarter of 2019. Unit shipments in 4Q20 increased 10.2 percent year over year and 15.3 percent compared to 3Q20.

The unified threat management (UTM) market accounted for 79.5 percent of the year-over-year increase in revenue, thanks largely to the strength of sales in the Asia Pacific region, the IDC report said.

Despite being significantly smaller overall, virtual private network (VPN) sales grew the most with year-over-year revenue growth of 21.8 percent.

Legacy security appliances, including traditional firewall and intrusion detection and prevention systems (IDS/IPS) experienced slight declines in unit shipments for the quarter.

“While the pandemic has dampened the appetite for on-premise security hardware around the world, standout performances in China and a few other regions helped the security appliance market grow an impressive 11.3 percent year over year,” said Pete Finalle, senior analyst, Security and Trust at IDC.
