Initial investigations indicate that the attackers employed a distributed denial of service (DDoS) attack, which floods servers with excessive traffic, thereby preventing fans from accessing the transmission of the Group D clash. This incident followed a similar disruption during Poland’s match against the Netherlands on Sunday.

The value of DDoS protection and mitigation security market is expected to grow at a CAGR of 13.2 percent from 2022 to 2027. The revenue forecast for 2027 is projected to reach $7.3 billion from $3.9 billion in 2022.

“We apologize for technical problems related to the broadcast of the Poland-Austria match on the Internet,” TVP stated in a post on X, the social media platform. The broadcaster further announced that it had set up an alternative website to ensure fans could continue to watch the game.

On Sunday, TVP disclosed that the cyberattack originated from IP addresses within Poland. However, it did not provide information regarding the origin of Friday’s hack.

The repeated cyberattacks have raised concerns about the security measures in place to protect digital broadcasts, especially during high-profile international events like the Euro 2024 championships. The financial implications of these disruptions could be significant, affecting advertising revenues and viewer trust.

TVP is likely to enhance its cybersecurity protocols to prevent further incidents. The Polish government may also be prompted to review and strengthen national cybersecurity strategies to safeguard against such attacks in the future.

The disruptions come at a time when digital viewership is becoming increasingly critical to broadcasters’ business models, highlighting the need for robust defenses against cyber threats.
