Ciena supports National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration to improve research

Ciena announced it has been selected by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) to build a private optical network.

A private optical network is powered by Ciena’s converged packet optical platforms and Ciena’s 6500 Packet-Optical Platform is equipped with WaveLogic 3 coherent optical processors and integrated switching capabilities.

The new 100G network will connect four geographically dispersed facilities in the Washington, D.C. metro area, including McLean, Va. and Suitland, Silver Spring and College Park, Md.

The company said NOAA can support bandwidth-intensive applications and programs such as the Geostationary Operational Environmental Satellite series R (GOES-R) and the next-generation national weather observation satellite program.


With the deployment of the Ciena packet-optical platform, NOAA can consolidate its network and make it more efficient.

Additionally, researches can access large volumes of complex climate and weather data and administration can provide bandwidth to support new scientific research and applications.

NOAA can also address increased bandwidth demands and provide high-capacity interconnectivity between locations allowing researchers to access weather related data.

“The Ciena 6500 platform will help us create a reliable, agile next-generation infrastructure that plays a significant role in our ability to support advanced environmental scientific research and discovery,” said Robert Sears, N-Wave Manager, Chief IT manager NOAA.

In April, Forsythe Data Center selected Ciena which offered 6500 Packet-Optical Platform equipped with FIPS certified layer 1 encryption.
