Infotech Lead India: Sunrise Health is deploying AppSense user virtualization and Unidesk desktop layering technologies as components in its Virtual Desktop Infrastructure (VDI) initiative.
The VDI deployment at the Canadian regional health authority incorporates 3,000 desktops, hundreds of applications, numerous use cases, and a range of mobile and fixed devices.
Sheranga Jayasinghe, director of IT, Sunrise Health Region, said: “VDI needed to be flexible to meet our diverse user, application, and desktop requirements, yet simple to implement and manage so we could spend more of our time on projects that move the quality of our health care forward.”
As part of one of the largest in North America, Unidesk desktops with AppSense software are being hosted on HP servers virtualized with VMware vSphere. The desktops are accessed by Citrix XenDesktop through Apple iPads, Android devices, Dell Wyse zero clients and existing PCs.
Sunrise Health will use AppSense for policy management, user rights management and mobile data access, Unidesk for desktop provisioning, image management and application delivery, and AppSense and Unidesk together for personalization.
Sunrise Health is increasing access to key healthcare applications and enabling its mobile workforce to work the way they want, while improving IT governance, control, and efficiency.
“By leveraging AppSense technology, Sunrise Health is able to control what data and settings are retained, what users have access to, how they access data and what they can do with it, all while giving IT staff the centralized control and user policies needed for czmpliance and standardization,” said Carl Cross, senior vice president of AppSense.
AppSense user virtualization software assists Sunrise Health to avoid needs to manage profile migration, redo login scripts or configure GPOs.
In addition, Unidesk enables Sunrise Health to create persistent and non-persistent desktops using 70-90 percent less VDI storage capacity than full-sized virtual desktops.
Application layers can be assigned to one or more desktops, patched once to update all desktops, or removed with a few clicks. One gold image of Windows is being used for all desktops, making VDI operating system patches and updates fast and easy.
