Polycom expands presence in Chinese VC market with several deals in recent months

Infotech Lead Asia: Unified Communication and Collaboration major Polycom is expanding its presence in China with several deals in the recent months.

Polycom’s latest deal with Nanning municipality in China is for deploying emergency response system (CERS) to improve the law and order and management of any crisis in the city.

“Market demand for videoconferencing systems is increasing, and we’re seeing growing interest from government agencies as they modernize their IT infrastructures. Polycom is honored to play a role in helping governments use video collaboration to better serve and protect citizens and their property and achieve greater operational efficiency,” said Steven Li, Polycom’s general manager in the Greater China Region.

Polycom, which has been a forerunner in deploying UC solutions to increase work efficiency or distance learning, has already deployed High Definition Video Network for China Merchants Bank (CMB) to give a competitive edge.

The videoconferencing major also assisted China Unicom in their second phase of expansion in China.

This apart, Educational Commission in Beijing had tapped Polycom for distant learning projects.

Increasingly, video solutions are moving away from high-end room-based systems to technologies that can help bring video applications to desktop and mobile devices, according to IDC.

Frost & Sullivan says the IP based communication in China is gaining attention and generating more than 70 percent of total revenue from enterprise telephony. It also predicted that the revenue will double in no time by 2014. In 2011, the market grew by 14.7 percent.

In fact, Polycom is becoming strong in Asia. It has already deployed similar solutions for CJ Group in South Korea and Bajaj Group in India.

However, the video conferencing revenue of Polycom has declined by 11.8 percent quarter over quarter and 15.2 percent year on year in Q3 2012. UC major Cisco’s revenue also plummeted by 14.7 percent annually, according to IDC.
