Industries shift towards multimodal transportation solutions

The focus of both private and public companies in the automotive and transportation industries is shifting to multimodal/ intermodal transportation solutions, ABI Research said.

According to the research, integrated Multimodal In-car OEM navigation system shipment will exceed 18 million by 2020.

Traveler information system provides real-time public transport timetable information, multimodal journey planners, and smartphone based pedestrian guidance applications.

HERE ( Jaguar and Land Rover), Google (Android Auto) and INRIX (BMW I brand) are the suppliers of multimodal in-car navigation solutions and journey planners.

Telematics

Real-time parking space availability content providers also play key role in removing the friction points between different modes of transportation, the research said.

Parking Spotter, a smart mobility project from Ford, for example, is based on ADAS sensors which allow information about open street side parking spaces identified by roaming vehicles which is shared with other drivers via cloud.

Telematics is gaining in public transport, which helps in integrating real-time transit schedule information into journey planners.

The new technologies like smart watches accelerate a seamless in and out of the car experience. An example of such an implementation is BMW i Remote Apple Watch application.

In another example, Uber car sharing is offered in multimodal journey planners by Google and mxDATA.

Last month, Autonet Mobile and AT&T delivered next generation of connected car solution and services to the automotive market.

ABI Research in 2013 had predicted that the number of embedded OEM-supplied rear-seat entertainment displays shipped in cars will reach 13.3 million units globally by 2020.
