Cisco announced Basic ConfD to accelerate the adoption of programmability for the networking industry.
Basic ConfD is available and can be downloaded. The software is available with an unlimited and permanent license.
Cisco acquired Tail-f last year for $175 millions. Tail-f provides two products, ConfD and NCS. Tail-f technologies center around the orchestration of physical and virtual networking, its core product platform is the Network Control System (NCS), a multi vendor network device management tool.
ConfD is a 10 year old Tail-F product, which is used by Cisco and its competitors. It provides network equipment vendors with a data model technology for configuration of device management. It reduces the time and resources needed to develop network management applications.
Over the period of 5 years, service providers can reduce configuration and management costs by nearly 50 percent by implementing an end-to-end programmable network based on open standards and can add new services.
Cisco is committed to advance open standards in the best interest of the networking industry.
75 network equipment providers are using ConfD. ConfD provides the implementation of the NETCONF protocol driven by the YANG data modelling language. The free Basic ConfD is feature rich and will be available for production use without additional fees for NETCONF. The premium version of ConfD is commercially available.
“ConfD reduces the time and resources to develop network management interfaces. Networking vendors leverage Basic ConfD to rapidly develop products that are fully NETCONF and YANG compliant,” said Fredrik Lundberg, director of strategy and planning, Cisco’s cloud and virtualization group.
