BlackBerry adds 2,400 enterprise customers in second quarter

BlackBerry today said it added 2,400 new enterprise customers in the second quarter ended August 29, 2015.

The enterprise mobility vendor said nearly 60 percent of the enterprise customer deals were connected to cross-platform licenses.

BlackBerry currently competes with Apple and Samsung in the smartphone market for enterprises.

Meanwhile, BlackBerry said its revenue for the quarter ended August 29, 2015 fell to $490 million from $916 million in the same quarter previous year.

The revenue breakdown for the quarter was approximately 15 percent for software and services, 41 percent for hardware, and 43 percent for service access fees (SAF), BlackBerry said.

The company recognized hardware revenue on over 800,000 BlackBerry smartphones with an ASP of approximately $240.

The company will enhance the BlackBerry 10 operating system 10.3.3 and will launch in March 2016 – focusing on security and privacy enhancements.

BlackBerry CEO John Chen said: “In order to expand our leadership in cross-platform software and services, we are investing strategically – organically through new products and services based on the BES platform, and through acquisitions like AtHoc and Good.”

On September 4, BlackBerry announced its deal to acquire Good Technology for $425 million to offer mobility security solution to strengthen its leadership in the Enterprise Mobility Management (EMM) value-added services.

On September 22, BlackBerry closed its acquisition of AtHoc, a provider of networked crisis alerts on any device including iOS, Android, PC and Mac desktops, digital displays, radios, IP phones, and endpoints, for $250 million.

Meanwhile, BlackBerry today announced that its slider device Priv running on the Android operating system will be launched this year. The Android smartphone will be on the BES12 platform offering security for enterprise customers.
