The number of Virtual Private Network (VPN) installations has soared to 348.7 million in the first half of 2021 against 45.24 million at December-end 2020, according to Atlas VPN’s Global VPN Adoption Index.
India has been ranked fourth among 85 countries in the VPN penetration rate for H1 2021.
VPN installation penetration went up from 3.28 percent population in 2020 to 25.27 percent in the first six months of 2021.
Qatar, the UAE and Singapore held the first three positions, respectively, in terms of overall penetration. India has surpassed all the countries on the list in terms of the volume of downloads. The VPN download data was extracted from Google Play Store and Apple App Store using Sensor Tower service and includes the 45 biggest VPN providers globally.
VPN’s software help companies, government agencies and individuals encrypt data transmitted over the internet. It prevents any snooping and information tapping by external sources while the data is in transit.
Meanwhile, India’s Parliamentary Standing Committee on Home Affairs is seeking a ban on VPNs. It has sought clarity on the response of the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology to the suggested ban.
MeitY responded to the recommendations by stating that Section 69A of the Information Technology Act, 2000 allows the government to block public access to information in certain cases such as in the interest of the sovereignty and integrity of the nation.
The global market for Virtual Private Servers estimated at $3.1 billion in 2020 is projected to reach $7.2 billion by 2026, growing at a CAGR of 14.8 percent over the analysis period, Global Industry Analysts (GIA) said.
Linux is projected to record a 15.4 percent CAGR and reach $5.7 Billion by the end of the period.
Growth in the Windows segment is forecast to achieve 13.4 percent CAGR for the next 7-year period.
The virtual private servers market in the U.S. is estimated at $1.1 billion in 2021. China’s virtual private server market is forecast to reach $1.3 billion by 2026 trailing a CAGR of 14.2 percent over the analysis period.
