Leaders of Ethernet switch, router and WLAN markets in 2018

Research agency IDC has released the latest reports on Ethernet switch market, router market and WLAN market for 2018.

Router market

Enterprise and service provider router market revenue touched $4.6 billion (+15.6 percent) in Q4 and $15.5 billion (+1.8 percent) in 2018.

The enterprise router market grew 2.2 percent, while the service provider router market rose 20.3 percent in Q4.

In 2018, the enterprise router market increased 1.2 percent, while the service provider router market rose 2 percent.

Cisco has combined service provider and enterprise router revenue share of 38.8 percent in 2018.

Cisco’s combined service provider and enterprise router revenue increased 17.9 percent in Q4, but was off 2.7 percent for the full year, giving the company 38.8 percent share in 2018.

Huawei Technologies has 28.7 percent share in the global enterprise and service provider router in 2018.

Hewlett Packard Enterprise (HPE) revenues rose 20.2 percent in 4Q18 and 16.5 percent in 2018. HPE increased its router market share to 6.1 percent in 2018 compared to 5.7 percent for 2017.

Juniper has 14.7 percent market share in the service provider routing market in 2018, down from 18 percent in 2017. Juniper’s router revenues declined 12.7 percent.

Ethernet switch market revenue reached $7.8 billion (+12.7 percent) in the fourth quarter of 2018 and $28.1 billion (+9.1 percent) in 2018.

Cisco achieved 13.2 percent increase in Ethernet switching revenues and market share of 53.2 percent in Q4. Cisco switching revenues rose 5.2 percent for 52.8 percent share compared to 54.8 percent in 2017.

Huawei’s Ethernet switch revenue grew 6 percent for a market share of 9.7 percent in Q4. Huawei’s Ethernet switch revenues rose 20.2 percent in 2018.

Arista Networks’ Ethernet switching revenue rose 23.6 percent. Arista’s switching market share stood at 6.5 percent in 2018 vs 5.6 percent in 2017.

Hewlett Packard Enterprise (HPE) revenues rose 20.2 percent year over year in 4Q18. That led to a 16.5 percent year over year increase in 2018, putting the company’s full year market share at 6.1 percent compared to 5.7 percent for 2017.

Juniper’s Ethernet switch revenues declined 2 percent year in Q4 and fell 3.1 percent in 2018.

WLAN market

The total consumer and enterprise WLAN market revenue increased 8.9 percent in the fourth quarter of 2018 and 4.3 percent in 2018.

The enterprise WLAN market grew 10.3 percent to $1.7 billion in Q4 and rose 7.1 percent to $6.1 billion in 2018.

Consumer WLAN market revenue rose 6.9 percent to $1.1 billion in Q4 and grew 0.2 percent in 2018.

Cisco’s enterprise WLAN revenues fell 2.3 percent sequentially. Cisco’s enterprise WLAN revenue rose 13.5 percent to $734 million in Q4 and grew 9.8 percent to $2.73 billion in 2018. Cisco has a WLAN share of 44.7 percent compared to 43.6 percent share in 2017.

HPE-Aruba WLAN revenues rose 3.4 percent sequentially and 20.8 percent year over year in the fourth quarter to $233.3 million and fell 0.1 percent to $851.5 million in 2018. HPE-Aruba has 13.9 percent share in WLAN market.

ARRIS/Ruckus revenues declined 13.2 percent quarter over quarter, increased 1.0 percent on a year-over-year and rose 19 percent in 2018, giving the company 6.5 percent WLAN market share.

Ubiquiti revenue from WLAN rose 7.9 percent sequentially and 33.2 percent year over year in 4Q18 to $113.4 million. For the full year, revenues rose 22.9 percent to $391.4 million, representing 6.4 percent market share.

Huawei’s WLAN market revenue rose 34.1 percent from the third quarter, grew 9.1 percent from Q4 2017 and rose 11.1 percent to $314.2 million in 2018, giving WLAN share of 5.1 percent in 2018.
