The latest IDC report has revealed the share of vendors in the router and Ethernet switch markets in the second-quarter of 2024.

Ethernet switch market
Ethernet switch revenues fell 14.1 percent year-over-year and rose 15.4 percent quarter-on-quarter to $10.2 billion in the second quarter of 2024 (2Q24).
Revenues in the datacenter (DC) portion of the Ethernet switch market rose 7.6 percent year-over-year and 15.8 percent quarter-on-quarter.
200/400 GbE switches revenues rose 104.3 percent year-over-year and 35.7 percent quarter-on-quarter due to strong demand in datacenters.
100Gb Ethernet switch revenues rose 13 percent quarter-on-quarter.
ODM (original device manufacturer) sales rose 66.9 percent year-over-year to account for 19.1 percent of the datacenter segment’s market revenues.
The non-datacenter (non-DC) segment of the Ethernet switch market, which includes Ethernet switches typically deployed in enterprise campus and branch locations, declined 28.9 percent year-over-year, but increased 15 percent quarter-on-quarter.
1GbE switch revenue declined 35.7 percent on an annualized basis but rose 10.4 percent sequentially.
In the United States, the Ethernet switch market declined 16.3 percent year-over-year but rose 12.3 percent sequentially.
In Western Europe, the Ethernet switch market fell 24.2 percent annually but grew 4.3 percent compared to the first quarter.
In Central & Eastern Europe, the Ethernet switch market declined 27.7 percent year over year and increased 11.0 percent sequentially.
In the Asia Pacific (excluding Japan and China), the Ethernet switch market was down 14.8 percent year over year but rose 10.0 percent sequentially.
In China, the Ethernet switch market grew 8.7 percent annually and 49.9 percent sequentially.
Ethernet switch vendors
Cisco Ethernet switch revenues fell 36.6 percent year-over-year in 2Q24 but rose 2.1 percent from 1Q24 to 2Q24. Cisco’s Ethernet switch share stood at 34.8 percent in 2Q24, down from 47.1 percent in 2Q23.
Arista Networks Ethernet switch revenues – 90.2 percent of which are in the DC segment – increased 12.4 percent year-over-year in 2Q24 and 7.0 percent sequentially. Arista Networks has 13.5 percent share in the Ethernet switch market.
Huawei’s Ethernet switch revenue rose 15.5 percent year-over-year and rose 100.9 percent sequentially. Huawei has 12 percent share in the Ethernet switch market in the second-quarter of 2024.
HPE’s Ethernet switch revenue – 86.2 percent of which are in the non-DC segment – fell 25.2 percent year-over-year but rose 6.5 percent from 1Q24 to 2Q24. HPE’s Ethernet switch share was 6.2 percent in Q2 2024.
H3C Ethernet switch revenue fell 3.7 percent year-over-year and rose 30.3 percent sequentially. H3C has 4.5 percent share in the Ethernet switch market in Q2 2024.
Router Market
Total enterprise and service provider (SP) router revenues fell 30.6 percent year-over-year to $3.2 billion in 2Q24.
The service provider segment of the router market, which includes both communications SPs and cloud SPs, made up 72.4 percent of the total router market and declined 35.2 percent year-over-year and 3.4 percent compared to the first quarter of 2024.
Revenues in the enterprise segment account for the remaining share of the market and declined 14.9 percent annually but rose 14.7 percent sequentially.
In Americas, the combined service provider and enterprise router market declined 34.8 percent year-over-year.
In the Asia Pacific region, the combined service provider and enterprise router market dropped 30.2 percent.
In Europe, Middle East & Africa, the combined service provider and enterprise router market fell 25.2 percent.
Router vendor share
Cisco’s SP and enterprise router revenue declined 39.2 percent year-over-year in 2Q24.
Huawei’s SP and enterprise router revenue fell 36.6 percent year-over-year in 2Q24. Huawei has 30.4 percent share in SP and enterprise router market.
H3C’s SP and enterprise routing market revenues fell 1.7 percent year-over-year. H3C has 2.9 percent share in the service provider and enterprise routing market.
