Dell achieves #1 position in server market in Q2

Server market revenue of global technology companies increased 43.7 percent to $22.5 billion during the second quarter of 2018. Server shipments increased 20.5 percent to 2.9 million units.

Volume server market achieved revenue of $18.4 billion (+42.7 percent), while midrange server revenue was $2.5 billion (+63 percent) and high-end systems revenue was $1.7 billion (+30.4 percent) in Q2 2018, said IDC.

“Enterprises invest in new infrastructure to support next-generation applications and achieve cloud-like benefits on premise. Hyperscalers update and expand their datacenter presence, benefiting ODM Direct suppliers,” Sanjay Medvitz, senior research analyst, Servers and Storage at IDC, said.

Dell achieved the number one position in the worldwide server market for the first time with 18.8 percent revenue share and 52.9 percent growth. Dell led the server market in terms of unit shipments, accounting for 19.5 percent of all units.

HPE was the second largest supplier with 16.6 percent share of total vendor revenue, growing 11.7 percent.

IBM has 7.3 percent and Lenovo has 6.9 percent share in the server market.

Inspur has 4.8 percent, Cisco has 4.8 percent, and Huawei has 4.3 percent share of the global server market.

IDC said the ODM Direct group of vendors increased its revenue by 55.9 percent (year over year) to $5.5 billion.
