Cisco share in Ethernet switching market dips to 59% in Q4, says IDC

IT market research agency IDC says the Ethernet switching market share of Cisco fell to 59.2 percent in Q4 2015 from 61.6 percent in Q3 2015.

Cisco grew 2.2 percent and recorded 60.7 percent market share in 2015.

Cisco held 56.1 percent of the 10GbE market in Q4 against 59 percent in the previous quarter. Cisco has recorded 58.4 percent share of 10Gb Ethernet revenue in 2015 compared to 61.1 percent in 2014. Cisco’s service provider and enterprise router revenue increased 2.1 percent year-over-year, while increasing 6 percent in 2015.

Hewlett Packard Enterprise’s (HPE) Ethernet switch revenue rose 1 percent in Q4, while declining 2 percent in 2015. HPE’s market share stands at 9.2 percent in Q4 against 9.0 percent in Q3. HPE has declined 2.0 percent and recorded 9.0 percent market share in 2015.

Juniper Networks’ Ethernet switching revenue increased 32 percent annually and 5.8 percent sequentially in Q4. Juniper grew 16.7 percent in the Ethernet switch market in 2015. Juniper router revenue rose 18.8 percent on an annualized basis, 4.9 percent sequentially, and 3.4 percent for the full year.

IDC said Huawei’s Ethernet switch revenue grew 39.3 percent year over year in Q4 and 66.4 percent sequentially and 34.9 percent for the full 2015. Huawei enterprise and SP router revenue increased 0.8 percent year over year in Q4 and saw a full-year increase of 22.1 percent.

The Ethernet switch market (Layer 2/3) revenue rose 3.2 percent y-o-y and 5.1 percent q-o-q to $6.4 billion in the fourth quarter of 2015. The market increased 1.9 percent in 2015.

The total enterprise and service provider (SP) router market grew 4 percent year-over-year and 9.9 percent quarter over quarter.

The router market increased 5.6 percent in 2015.

Rohit Mehra, vice president, Network Infrastructure, at IDC, said: “Price erosion continues to obscure the rapidly increasing demand for switching infrastructure to meet the explosive needs of cloud and mobility across service provider and enterprise segments.”

The enterprise and service provider router market grew 4 percent in Q4 with 3.9 percent increase in the service provider segment and a 4.4 percent increase in enterprise routing. The enterprise and service provider router market grew 6.7 percent in 2015.
