Intel adds experts to its team to boost IoT business

Internet of “Things” (IoT) is nothing short of a revolution and a massive surge of more than 50 billion devices expected to come online over the next few years, Intel said.

The chip-maker said this revolution requires a new generation of technology and 5G connectivity that can serve a far broader set and multitude of devices, process volumes of data, and satisfy our ever-growing human need for connectedness.

In the face of this revolution, Intel announced the addition of experienced leaders to its IoT division.  Tom Lantzsch will be joining Intel’s executive leadership team as  new senior vice president and general manager of the IoT Group.

Most recently, he was the executive vice president of strategy at ARM, where he spent the last 10 years of his career. Tom will join the team formally in January.

Intel’s core business, the supply of PC brains, is facing headwinds. Hence, the company is looking for various revenue streams such as manufacturing microprocessors for automated cars and smart devices. It is also looking for new business in machine learning and cloud data centers.

The IoT business is just 4 percent of the company’s third quarter revenue. However, Intel expects to tap opportunities from the change in technology happening all around us.

Intel CEO Brian Krzanich envisions automated cars and formed Automated Driving Group (ADG) for this project. The company today said Doug Davis will lead this division.

Kathy Winter will assist Doug as vice president and general manager of the Automated Solutions Division (ASD) to deliver automated driving solutions.

Prior to joining Intel this year, Kathy was vice president of software and services for automated driving at Delphi.
