Unity Initiates Substantial Workforce Reductions in Strategic Overhaul

Unity, a prominent gaming company renowned for its widely used game engine, has declared intentions to implement a sizable reduction in its workforce, amounting to approximately 25 percent or about 1,800 employees.
Unity Gaming ServicesOutlined in a filing submitted to the US Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), the company unveiled plans to “reduce approximately 1,800 employee roles, or approximately 25 per cent of its current workforce.” This drastic step is aimed at restructuring the company’s operations, focusing on its core business, and positioning itself for sustained long-term growth and profitability.

Unity has attributed these layoffs to the strategic overhaul and refocusing efforts. However, the company expressed its inability to accurately project the costs and charges associated with this workforce reduction, anticipating substantial expenses primarily incurred during the first quarter of 2024.

Elaborating on the anticipated costs, the company clarified that these charges would chiefly pertain to employee transition, severance payments, and employee benefits.

This announcement follows a series of workforce reductions undertaken by Unity in recent times. Notably, in November of the preceding year, the company implemented layoffs impacting 265 employees, marking one of the successive rounds of cuts.

Unity’s downsizing initiative aligns with broader trends within the video game industry, which witnessed significant workforce reductions in 2023, affecting over 9,000 employees on a global scale.

Several industry giants faced similar measures during the previous year. Epic Games, the developer behind Fortnite, disclosed plans in September to lay off approximately 16 percent of its workforce, affecting nearly 870 employees. Likewise, French video game publisher Ubisoft, responsible for popular franchises like Assassin’s Creed and Far Cry, undertook a corporate restructuring leading to the layoff of about 124 employees in November.

Amidst these workforce reshaping endeavors, Embracer Group made headlines through a series of acquisitions of gaming studios, media firms, and the acquisition of IP rights to The Lord of the Rings. Additionally, EA (Electronic Arts) underwent its own restructuring, resulting in a 6 percent reduction in its workforce, impacting roughly 780 individuals.
