Strategies and launch plans of gaming companies amid GTA VI delay

The delay in the launch of “Grand Theft Auto VI” to May 2026 by Take-Two Interactive has created a unique window of opportunity for other gaming companies to adjust their strategies and release schedules.

As the gaming industry braces for one of the most anticipated titles in recent years, several publishers are repositioning their releases to capitalize on the absence of GTA VI in the 2025 fall lineup, Reuters news report said.

Strategic Timing and Release Window

Electronic Arts (EA):

EA was quick to respond to the delay announcement, setting the release date of its new “Battlefield” title within the fiscal year ending March 2026. The launch is strategically timed to avoid a head-to-head clash with GTA VI, allowing EA to maximize potential sales. Analysts project that EA could sell 4 to 5 million units of “Battlefield” by the end of the fiscal year, compared to the 3 to 4 million units it might have sold had GTA VI been released on schedule.

EA’s CEO Andrew Wilson emphasized the advantage of a clearer launch window during a post-earnings call, suggesting that EA might also leverage the period to further monetize live-service titles such as “Apex Legends” and its annual sports franchises, including “FC” and “Madden NFL”.

Take-Two Interactive:

While “GTA VI” has been delayed, Take-Two is utilizing the 2025 fall window to launch “Mafia: The Old Country,” a new installment in the Mafia franchise. This title aims to keep the publisher in the spotlight while maintaining a competitive presence in the market until GTA VI’s release.

Techland and Embracer Group:

Smaller studios and publishers like Techland and Embracer Group are now eyeing the September to December 2025 period to release titles such as “Dying Light: The Beast” and “Killing Floor 3.”

Both titles have yet to lock in specific release dates, but the absence of GTA VI could provide them with a less congested launch window, enabling them to capture market share without contending with a potential sales juggernaut.

Expansion Packs, Remasters, and Smaller Titles

The delay of GTA VI is also expected to benefit smaller studios and developers who can expedite the release of expansion packs, remastered titles, or lower-budget games that can be completed within a shorter development cycle.

These titles can strategically fill the gap in the holiday season, leveraging increased consumer spending while avoiding direct competition with major AAA titles.

Impact on Console Sales and Pricing

The delay of GTA VI also has broader implications for console sales. The game was anticipated to drive significant console sales in 2025, but the delay may result in decreased demand for Xbox and PlayStation consoles, particularly as both companies have raised prices in response to higher tariffs on imports from Japan, China, and Vietnam.

Potential Market Saturation and Consumer Behavior

While several publishers may attempt to capitalize on the GTA VI delay by releasing their titles in the fall, there is a risk of market saturation, especially in an economic environment where consumer spending is more selective.

According to Chris Hewish of Xsolla, the increased number of releases could intensify competition, leading to potential cannibalization of sales as gamers become more discerning about where to allocate their spending.

Overall Industry Impact

Despite the challenges, the delay in GTA VI may still present a silver lining for the global gaming industry. With EA, Take-Two, and other publishers stepping in to fill the gap, there is a possibility of industry-wide revenue stability, provided that these companies can effectively execute their release strategies and avoid oversaturating the market.
