Casado, one of the inventors of software-defined networking, was co-founder of Nicira, a company acquired by VMware in 2012.

He is a key driver in building VMware NSX, the company’s network virtualization platform, to become the $100 million and growing VMware business.

Meanwhile, the battle between VMware and Cisco are heating up in the software-defined networking (SDN) domain, with VMware announcing its NSX licenses to be sold via channel partners.

Before launching the NSX platform in October, VMware management stated that the company does not intend to harm its partnership with enterprise networking vendor Cisco by launching competing SDN products.

Martin replaces Steve Mullaney, who decided to leave the company.

Earlier, VMware announced its Q2 2014 earnings reporting a year-over-year increase in product license revenues (+16 percent) and services revenues (+18 percent).

The company expects its Q3 net revenues to be 17 percent higher than the prior year quarter at $1.47 billion, while license revenues are expected to be around $640 million, 13 percent higher than the year-ago period.

The company expects to generate close to $6 billion in revenues for the full year.
