Odisha deploys Doppler radar to forecast cyclonic storms

Odisha, a natural calamity prone state, on Saturday got its first Doppler radar that will enable early and accurate forecast of cyclonic storms, excessive rainfall, thunderstorms and hailstorms.

P.K. Mishra, additional principal secretary to the prime minister, inaugurated the Doppler radar at Paradip.

Mishra said a decision to set up the Doppler radar was taken after the super-cyclone in 1999.

Odisha Chief Secretary G.C. Pati said another Doppler radar would be functional within one month while one more facility would be set up at Sambalpur that would be operational in next one year.
