Indian Railways to install 10,000 POS machines

Indian Railways has decided to install 10,000 Point of Sale (POS) machines in association with the State Bank of India at various locations of including ticket counters of Indian Railways – for promoting cashless transaction.

Indian Railways has already installed more than 4,000 POS machines across Zonal Railways, said minister of State for Railways Rajen Gohain.

Indian Railways is making cashless payments to all vendors and contractors. Indian Railways made the payments through National Electronic Funds Transfer (NEFT)/Real Time Gross Settlement (RTGS) mode only.

Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC) has achieved a net profit of Rs 189 crore (+44 percent) in financial year 2015-16.

IRCTC portal has collected Rs 24,023 crore from the sale of train tickets during the year 2015-16.

IRCTC has generated revenue from activities: service charges on internet tickets, sales of Rail Neer packaged water, sales of on-board catering services, license fee from outsourced catering vendors and revenue from tourism services.

Railways and security

Indian Railways is conducting coordination at all levels with Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA), State Governments, Central/State Intelligence Agencies and State Police/GRP authorities for security of railway infrastructure including railway tracks and stations.

Security Help Line number 182 is made operational over Indian Railways for security related assistance to passengers in distress.

Indian Railways has sanctioned an Integrated Security System consisting of surveillance of vulnerable stations through Close Circuit Television Camera Network, Access Control etc. to improve surveillance mechanism over 202 railway stations.

RPF is escorting 2500 trains on vulnerable and indentified routes/sections, in addition to 2200 trains escorted by GRP of different states daily.
