India has announced that it will track around 100 toll plazas using GIS-based software in a move aimed at improving traffic flow on national highways. This live monitoring system is designed to enhance the tolling experience and ensure the smooth movement of vehicles.
The initiative comes in response to congestion reports received via the 1033 National Highway helpline, as per the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways. The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) revealed that this software will offer real-time congestion alerts and lane distribution suggestions when vehicle queues exceed a certain limit at toll plazas.
Developed by the Indian Highways Management Company (IHMCL), a subsidiary of NHAI, the software will initially monitor about 100 toll plazas. The system will gradually expand to cover more locations across the country.
Key features of the software include displaying the toll plaza’s name and location, live updates on queue lengths, total waiting time, and vehicle speeds. Additionally, it will provide detailed analysis of traffic patterns on an hourly, daily, weekly, and monthly basis, offering valuable insights to NHAI officials.
This system aligns with NHAI’s objectives to enhance highway efficiency. Toll fee collections on national highways amounted to ₹54,811.13 crore in the fiscal year 2023-24, while ₹6,523 crore was allocated for highway maintenance during the same period.
