In a Facebook post on Wednesday, Sheryl Sandberg, former Chief Operating Officer of Meta Platforms, revealed her intention to step down from the company’s board of directors once her term concludes in May.
Sheryl Sandberg expressed confidence in Meta’s robust business and its well-positioned stance for the future, citing this as the opportune moment to transition. She announced that post-departure, she will continue to serve as an adviser to the company.
Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg has responded to Sandberg’s announcement, expressing anticipation for “a new chapter together.”
Sheryl Sandberg’s decision follows a tenure of more than 14 years as the company’s Chief Operating Officer, coupled with a 12-year stint on its board. Notably, Sheryl Sandberg relinquished her role as Meta’s Operations Chief in 2022.
Once the second-in-command to Meta’s founder Zuckerberg, Sheryl Sandberg emerged as one of the company’s most prominent figures and played a pivotal role in shaping its frequently criticized ads-based business model, Reuters news report said.
Throughout her tenure, Sheryl Sandberg staunchly defended Facebook amid numerous controversies, consistently asserting that the company’s executives were learning from mistakes and refining tools to enhance content moderation against harmful material.
Before her association with Facebook, Sheryl Sandberg served as the Vice President of Global Online Sales and Operations at Google. Additionally, she held the position of Chief of Staff for the United States Treasury Department during the presidency of Bill Clinton.
A graduate of Harvard University, Sheryl Sandberg is also an accomplished author, penning several books, including the notable 2013 feminist manifesto, “Lean In: Women, Work, and the Will to Lead.”
