Social media major Facebook said it has started testing its Express WiFi, which is designed to provide internet access to rural parts of the country.
According to the company’s Internet.org website, the service is currently live in India and is set to expand to other regions soon.
Facebook said it is “working with ISPs and carriers and local entrepreneurs” to help expand the project. working with carriers, internet service providers, and local entrepreneurs to help expand connectivity to underserved locations around the world.
Earlier in the year, Facebook faced criticism for violating net neutrality in Free Basics. It is testing new ways to provide connectivity to the rural areas.
However, Facebook did not share any info if it plans any limit on the usage of internet or if the access is provided for only a few websites.
According to the social media major, Express Wifi empowers local entrepreneurs to help provide quality internet access to their neighbors and make a steady income. Working with local internet service providers or mobile operators, they’re able to use software provided by Facebook to connect their communities.
Citing a Facebook official, PTI news agency reported that the company is focusing on building a sustainable economic model for all stakeholders involved so that local retailer entrepreneurs, ISPs, operators and Facebook can continue to invest in and operate lasting connectivity.
