SoftBank to buy robotics co Boston Dynamics from Alphabet

SoftBank JapanSoftBank is set to buy robotics company Boston Dynamics from Alphabet Inc.

The strategy of SoftBank is to make investment in advanced technologies including smart robotics.

Marc Raibert is the CEO and founder of Boston Dynamics.

As part of the transaction with Alphabet, SoftBank will also acquire Japanese bipedal robotics company Schaft.

Schaft, founded in 2012 in the JSK Robotics Laboratory at the University of Tokyo, has continued its work under the leadership of co-founders Yuto Nakanishi, Junichi Urata, Narito Suzuki and Koichi Nishiwaki.

“Smart robotics are going to be a key driver of the next stage of the Information Revolution, and Marc and his team at Boston Dynamics are the clear technology leaders in advanced dynamic robots,” said Masayoshi Son, chairman and CEO of SoftBank Group.
