Samsung develops GDDR7 DRAM to improve graphics performance

Samsung Electronics has reached a groundbreaking milestone in the world of graphics technology, completing the development of the industry’s first Graphics Double Data Rate 7 (GDDR7) DRAM.

Building on its previous success in developing the industry’s first 24Gbps GDDR6 DRAM last year, Samsung’s latest offering in the form of 16-gigabit (Gb) GDDR7 represents the pinnacle of speed and performance. Through innovations in integrated circuit (IC) design and packaging, Samsung has achieved outstanding stability even under high-speed operations.

The GDDR7 DRAM boasts an impressive bandwidth of 1.5 terabytes-per-second (TBps), surpassing GDDR6’s 1.1TBps by 1.4 times. This significant increase in speed per pin, now up to 32Gbps, is made possible by adopting the Pulse-Amplitude Modulation (PAM3) signaling method as the new memory standard, replacing the Non-Return-to-Zero (NRZ) used in previous generations. PAM3 enables the transmission of 50 percent more data within the same signaling cycle compared to NRZ, driving faster data transfer rates.

Moreover, Samsung’s GDDR7 design showcases its commitment to energy efficiency. The new memory standard is 20 percent more energy-efficient than GDDR6, thanks to power-saving design technology that is specifically optimized for high-speed operations. As an added advantage, Samsung offers a low-operating voltage option tailored to applications, such as laptops, that require greater power consumption control.

To address concerns about heat generation, Samsung has employed an epoxy molding compound (EMC) with high thermal conductivity as the packaging material, coupled with meticulous IC architecture optimization. These advancements result in an impressive 70-percent reduction in thermal resistance when compared to GDDR6, ensuring stable product performance even under conditions of intense high-speed operations.
