Lenovo wins 1.5 million laptop order from Tamil Nadu

Lenovo, India’s #3 PC maker, has won an order from the Tamil Nadu government for supplying over 1.5 million laptops to students in the state, PTI reported.
lenovo yoga features“We have won a large order from the Tamil Nadu government for supplying over 1.56 million laptops for free distribution to students in the state,” Lenovo India Director (Commercial Named Account Business) Stephen Sequeira.

Stephen Sequeira said state-owned ELCOT — the nodal agency for procuring electronic hardware and software for the state government and its schemes — finalised the tender where Lenovo outbid the other brands.

HP has a PC market share of 28.1 percent as compared with 25.9 percent for Dell and 25.2 percent for Lenovo.

The commercial PC market rose 7.3 percent to 1.35 million units in Q1 2019 — primarily driven by the delivery of around 159,000 PC units to ELCOT.

HP’s PC shipment fell 9.7 percent mainly due to consumer segment which declined by 21.3 percent.

Dell achieved year-on-year growth of 2.2 percent and quarter-on-quarter growth of 26.7 percent in PC market. Dell’s commercial business achieved 25.9 percent year-on-year growth owing to prioritization of India market.

Lenovo’s PC business achieved growth of 6.2 percent year-on-year and 29.2 percent quarter on quarter. Lenovo’s consumer PC business dropped. Lenovo’s commercial PC business achieved quarterly growth of 70.8 percent driven by partial execution of ELCOT deal, since Lenovo is the sole executor of this project.

India PC market dropped 8.3 percent to 2.15 million units in Q1 2019. The market remained weak outside big commercial deals due to weak consumer demand, high inventory from previous quarters, and supply issues for Intel chips.

The India consumer PC market dropped 26.5 percent due to low spending and seasonality.
