India PC Market Hits Record 15.9 mn in 2025 as AI Notebooks Drive Growth: IDC

India’s personal computer (PC) market delivered its strongest performance on record in 2025, with shipments reaching 15.9 million units, reflecting a 10.2 percent increase, according to IDC.

The milestone marks the first time the country’s annual PC shipments have crossed the 15 million unit threshold, surpassing the demand levels seen during the pandemic-driven surge in FY2021 and FY2022. The Indian PC market also closed the year with strong momentum, as shipments reached 4.1 million units in the fourth quarter of 2025, representing an 18.5 percent increase compared with the same period a year earlier.

PC prices in India have already increased by over 10 percent. Price of PCs in India could rise another 15–20 percent in the coming quarters. The rise in PC price will negatively impact price-sensitive segments such as SMBs and the government.

“Processor shortages may limit entry-level PC availability, shifting some demand toward alternative devices like tablets and smartphones,” Navkendar Singh, associate vice president, Devices Research, IDC India, South Asia & ANZ, said.

Top PC brands in the 15.918 million PC market in India in 2025 are: HP (29.1 percent share), Lenovo (18.7 percent), Dell (15.1 percent), Acer (15 percent), ASUS (7.6 percent), Others (14.5 percent).

Notebooks Continue to Lead Market Expansion

Notebooks remained the dominant category in India’s PC market and the primary driver of growth in 2025. Shipments in the segment rose 12.4 percent year over year for the full year and accelerated to 23.9 percent growth in the fourth quarter, Bharath Shenoy, research manager, IDC India & South Asia, said in the report.

Desktop shipments posted modest growth, increasing 3.6 percent during the year and 6.2 percent in the final quarter.

Workstations emerged as the fastest-growing segment, expanding 24.2 percent in 2025 and 18.7 percent in the fourth quarter. The surge was fueled by rising demand for professional computing, engineering applications, and high-performance workloads across industries.

Premium notebooks priced above $1,000 also recorded steady growth, increasing 8.2 percent despite currency fluctuations and higher device prices. Demand for high-performance systems continued to support this segment.

AI Notebooks Become a Major Growth Driver

Artificial intelligence capabilities are rapidly reshaping the PC market in India. AI-enabled notebooks recorded a dramatic 129.3 percent year-over-year surge in shipments during 2025.

Basic AI notebooks accounted for 86.6 percent of the total AI notebook market, driven largely by enterprise deployments and consumer promotional campaigns.

Meanwhile, generative AI notebooks gained significant traction among consumers. Devices from Apple led this category, with the Apple MacBook portfolio capturing a 70.9 percent market share.

Enterprise Demand Fuels Commercial Segment Growth

The commercial segment remained the backbone of India’s PC market expansion. Commercial shipments reached 8.6 million units in 2025.

Enterprise demand grew strongly, rising 20.9 percent as organizations upgraded computing infrastructure and supported hybrid work environments. Small and medium businesses also contributed to growth, with shipments increasing 8.2 percent during the year.

Strong enterprise orders and partial fulfilment of the ELCOT manifesto deal boosted shipments in the fourth quarter, when commercial volumes reached 2.6 million units.

Consumer Segment Supported by Online Sales

India’s consumer PC segment shipped 7.3 million units in 2025, registering a 3.6 percent increase compared with the previous year. Festive season promotions and strong online demand helped sustain growth across the year.

However, supply delays affected availability in the final quarter, resulting in a slight 2.6 percent year-over-year decline in consumer shipments during the period.

Online retail continued to play an important role in the market’s expansion. The eTail channel grew 12 percent in 2025 and increased 5.2 percent in the fourth quarter, driven by deeper market penetration and aggressive discounting strategies.

PCs are increasingly being adopted for advanced content creation, high-end gaming, and virtual learning applications. Growing vendor investments in AI-powered capabilities are also expected to accelerate future demand.

The Indian PC market faced supply challenges toward the end of 2025 due to processor shortages, which constrained shipments in some segments. RAJANI BABURAJAN
