IDC’s Personal Computing Device Tracker said the growth in the PC market in India was driven by notebooks and desktops, which grew by 4.5 percent and 1.8 percent, respectively, while workstation shipments saw the highest increase at 10.9 percent.

The fourth quarter of 2024 was particularly strong, with the market expanding by 6.9 percent, fueled by a 9.6 percent rise in notebook shipments. Premium notebooks priced above $1,000 saw a notable 13.8 percent growth, reflecting a shift in consumer preferences toward high-performance devices.

The consumer segment of the PC market grew by 2.6 percent in 2024, with a 2.2 percent increase in Q4. This growth was significantly influenced by the eTailer channel, which experienced a remarkable 21.7 percent YoY surge in 2024 and a 29 percent jump in Q4.

The late-year boost was attributed to vendors stocking up ahead of major sales events, such as the Republic Day sales in January. Meanwhile, the commercial segment exhibited stronger growth, increasing by 5.1 percent for the year and 11.1 percent in Q4.

Government and enterprise demand played a pivotal role in this expansion, with orders through the Government e-Marketplace (GeM) and investments from large corporations driving 10.6 percent growth in both segments.

A key trend influencing the Indian PC market was the rising demand for gaming and AI-powered PCs. The gaming segment posted double-digit growth in 2024, supported by increasing interest in high-performance notebooks.

AI-powered notebooks also saw a sharp rise in shipments from mid-2024 onwards, with demand for Intel Core Ultra and AMD Ryzen AI-powered laptops gaining momentum. This shift reflects a growing interest in AI-driven computing capabilities among Indian consumers and enterprises alike.

HP has retained its leadership position with a 30.1 percent market share by shipping 4.35 million (down 0.9 percent) units, leading both consumer and commercial segments. While its government and enterprise shipments grew by 14.7 percent and 14.3 percent, respectively, its consumer segment witnessed a 7.5 percent decline due to rising competition in the eTailer channel.

Lenovo has secured the second spot with a 17.2 percent share by shipping 2.49 million units (up 7.3 percent), recording growth of 7 percent in the consumer segment and 7.4 percent in the commercial segment. Lenovo’s strong performance was driven by its enterprise sales and a focused push through eTailers, contributing to an overall 7.3 percent growth.

Dell Technologies has ranked third with a 16.1 percent market share by shipping 2.33 million (up 8.1 percent) units, holding a strong second position in the commercial segment with 21 percent market share, driven by enterprise and small-to-medium business (SMB) sales. However, it slipped to fifth place in the consumer segment despite a modest 3.9 percent growth.

Acer Group has claimed the fourth spot with a 15.1 percent market share shipping 2.18 million (up 27.7 percent) units. Acer achieved the highest growth among the top five vendors in 2024. A strong push through eTailers, competitive pricing, and aggressive discounts propelled its consumer segment to an impressive 48.4 percent growth. Additionally, Acer’s SMB and government business contributed to a 16.6 percent increase in its commercial segment. Acer Group’s market share surged from 12.3 percent in 2023 to 15.1 percent in 2024, signifying an increasing preference for Acer devices in India.

Asus has secured the fifth position with 7 percent market share by shipping 1.01 million (down 7.8 percent) as it prioritized channel inventory management over aggressive expansion. However, Asus gained traction in the commercial segment, recording an 18.4 percent growth.

Looking ahead, the commercial PC market in India is expected to maintain its growth momentum, driven by demand for hardware refresh cycles and continued public sector investments. Enterprises are expected to begin replacing PCs purchased during the 2020-21 boom, as they approach the end of their typical three-to-four-year lifecycle.

However, challenges such as a weakening rupee could result in higher device costs, potentially impacting price-sensitive SMBs and consumers. Despite these hurdles, the Indian PC market is projected to achieve low single-digit growth in 2025, supported by steady demand across key segments.
