The International Data Corporation (IDC) anticipates a significant growth of 10.8 percent year over year in global shipments of gaming monitors in 2023. Simultaneously, the gaming PC market is expected to witness a decline of 10.5 percent during the same period.
Despite the decline in gaming PCs, the market is projected to contract less than the overall PC market due to enticing offers on previous generation products and current generation discounts, resulting from excess inventory.
Buyers are leveraging these opportunities to upgrade their gaming setups at more affordable prices. Conversely, the gaming monitor market has rebounded in the first half of 2023, attributed to vendors strategically focusing on profitable display market segments amidst a general downturn.
Jitesh Ubrani, research manager for IDC’s Mobility and Consumer Device Trackers, highlighted the impact of poor macroeconomic conditions on the purchasing power of both general consumers and gamers. The cautious approach towards spending prompts many gamers to retain their existing PCs for longer durations or contemplate purchasing refurbished gaming PCs to manage costs.
After experiencing five quarters of year-on-year volume declines, the gaming monitor market showcased positive momentum in the second quarter, as mentioned by Jay Chou, research manager for IDC’s Worldwide Quarterly PC Monitor Tracker.
Improved cost structures and sustained industry focus are expected to drive a robust recovery in the gaming monitor market. The cost-effectiveness of gaming monitors, priced slightly over $300 on average, positions them as an attractive means to enhance user experience, both in and outside of gaming.
Looking ahead, the market is anticipated to witness improvements in 2024 and beyond. Gaming PCs are projected to achieve a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 4.6 percent between 2023 and 2027, demonstrating a resurgence in demand. Concurrently, gaming monitors are forecasted to experience a CAGR of 7.7 percent during the same period, reflecting a positive trajectory for this essential gaming device category.
