Freescale unveils new reference design for IoT

Freescale Semiconductor has unveiled a new reference design for Internet of Things (IoT) applications including building/home management, smart cities, networked industrial services and other applications.

The production-ready QorIQ LS1021A IoT gateway is available for order from Freescale for $429 (USD).

The reference design, designed in partnership with Freescale manufacturing partner TechNexion, provides customers with a ready-made platform that can fast-track their IoT applications to market, the company said.

Dubbed as LS1021A IoT gateway, the new reference design is engineered to shorten design cycles and speed time to market for OEMs. Additionally, the offering’s remarkable versatility allows IoT service providers to replace multiple boxes with a single, low-cost unified appliance.

At the heart of Freescale gateway lies the QorIQ LS1021A ARM-based processor, which is engineered for fanless, enterprise and consumer networking applications such as IoT gateways; as well as enterprise access points and security appliances.

The processors’ sophisticated virtualization and security capabilities provide the kind of reliability that other IoT gateways just can’t deliver, said Tareq Bustami, vice president of Freescale’s Digital Networking division.

The IoT gateway solution also integrates a number of other Freescale products including the Kinetis K20 microcontroller (MCU), an audio codec, and CAN (Control Area Network) PHYs, as well as the new MC34VR500 multi-output DC-DC converter for optimized power management.

In another development, Freescale announced the launch of two new solid-state RF power transistor products and an application development ecosystem for microwave oven industry.

The new RF transistors are engineered to enable consumer and commercial microwave oven appliance OEMs to create differentiated solutions and novel product types for a new cooking paradigm.

Freescale’s new portfolio of high-power, high-efficiency RF heating products includes the MHT1003N, a 250 W transistor with 58 percent power added efficiency for 2.45 GHz microwave oven applications, and the MHT1002N, a 350 W transistor with 63 percent power added efficiency for 915 MHz microwave applications.

The MHT1003N and MHT1002N RF power transistors are available in the OM-780-2L and -4L packages, for $37.00 and $26.00 (USD) in 10K quantities, respectively.
