The latest data released by Canalys has shed light on the performance of the PC market in India during the second quarter of 2023. According to the report, vendors shipped a total of 3.9 million PCs, including desktops, notebooks, and tablets, marking a significant 15 percent year-on-year decline.
Leading vendors in the PC market in India are: HP (25.3 percent share), Lenovo (16.5 percent), Dell (10.5 percent), Acer (10.3 percent), and Apple (8.3 percent).
Notebooks bore the brunt of the decline, with shipments plummeting by 12 percent to 2.3 million units. Desktops also faced a downturn, dropping by 17 percent to 764,000 units. The tablet segment experienced the most significant setback, with a staggering 22 percent decline, resulting in 873,000 units shipped. However, the PC market, excluding tablets, displayed a promising 2 percent sequential growth, sparking optimism within the industry.
All segments of India’s PC market witnessed a year-on-year decline in Q2 2023. “The education sector suffered a notable 23 percent drop, primarily due to delayed tablet deployments,” stated Canalys Analyst Ashweej Aithal. “Nonetheless, government initiatives to provide students with notebooks showed progress, particularly in states such as Gujarat, Tamil Nadu, and Madhya Pradesh.”
Despite an improved economic sentiment, the commercial sector experienced a significant decline, primarily attributed to small and medium-sized businesses (SMBs). The public sector also saw a 9 percent decrease, although a few promising deals hint at potential growth by the end of 2023. Aithal commented, “The anticipated closure of education tenders is in its final phase, with most deployments expected in October and spanning the next six months.”
In the consumer market, there was a year-on-year decline of 13 percent; however, it managed to achieve a 7 percent sequential growth, indicating positive signs of recovery as the festive season approaches. As the industry navigates these challenging times, stakeholders are closely watching for trends that may define the trajectory of the PC market in the upcoming quarters.
