
Infotech Lead India: ASUS Technology is set to expand in India to gain significant market share in notebook segment.
The company is planning to become the third largest notebook player in India by 2013-14 from its current position of sixth.
ASUS Technology will be expanding its manpower and reach in Tier 3 and 4 cities to expand its presence from the present 40-plus reach.
The company did not disclose the number of manpower to be added during the next 12-18 months.
Currently, 10 percent of its total income is from business segment, while the balance coming from retail users.
“We expect changes in the enterprise-retail business mix. There will be significant growth in enterprise business in coming months. Tier 3 and 4 cities are already showing double digit growth. This is despite difficult market conditions,” Alex Huang, managing director, System Business Group, Asus India, told InfotechLead.com.
ASUS will also be expanding its tablet range by introducing a couple of new cost effective and premium range of tablets this year.
On Tuesday, MAIT said Indian notebooks market grew 26 percent to 3.7 million units.
Notebook and Netbook combined sales grew 22 percent in 2011-12 despite the rising inflation. This growth is primarily driven by the household segment, which accounted for about 58 percent of the total Notebook sales and registered 26 percent growth during 2011-12.
The contribution among lower SEC’s (SEC B and SEC C) was on the increase contributing around 55 percent.
Notebook sales among establishments during 2011-12 ended with 18 percent growth. The growth has mainly come from Small and Large Enterprises posting a growth of 38 percent and 35 percent. Large Establishments has increased its contribution to 55 percent from 48 percent from the previous year 2010-11.
Netbook registered sales of 2.87 lakh unit, down 11 percent. The decline has largely due to poor demand from enterprises which declined 35 percent. House segment has shown 32 percent growth.
The ICT industry is expecting that growth in Internet penetration will enhance the growth of notebooks market. The number of active Internet entities grew to 15.9 million in March 2012, up 15 percent over March 2011. Internet penetration in the 22 cities was 63 percent among businesses and 32 percent among households.
