AMD said its Ryzen Threadripper 2990WX processor with 32 cores and 64 threads targeting the desktop PC market will offer better performance than rival Intel.
Research firm Canalys said tablet and PC shipments will dip by 2.1 percent to 398 million units in 2018.
“Commercial customers will be a vital driver for PC shipments in 2018,” said Canalys Research Analyst Ishan Dutt.
IDC said shipments of PCs — desktop, notebook, and workstation – rose 2.7 percent to 62.3 million units in Q2 2018.
“Though traditional PCs may not be the default device for many usage scenarios, the market continues to show pockets of resiliency as PC usage experience evolves and improves,” said Jay Chou, research manager with IDC’s Personal Computing Device Tracker.
AMD has built the 2nd Gen AMD Ryzen Threadripper processors using 12nm “Zen+” x86 processor architecture — delivering up to 53 percent more performance than Intel’s flagship model the Core i9-7980XE.
Second Gen AMD Ryzen Threadripper processors are compatible with existing AMD X399 chipset motherboards via a BIOS update.
“AMD reinvigorated the PC market with the launch of Ryzen processors, bringing new choices to buyers of performance PCs”, said Alex Herrera, analyst and author of Jon Peddie Research’s Workstation Report.
AMD’s 2nd Gen Ryzen Threadripper 2990WX offers up to 47 percent more rendering performance for creators than the Core i9-7980XE.
AMD has enhanced the 2nd Gen AMD Ryzen Threadripper X Series with higher base and boost clocks.
16-core/32-thread 2nd Gen AMD Ryzen Threadripper 2950X delivers up to 41 percent more multi-threaded performance than the Core i9-7900X.
The Intel competitor said 2nd Gen AMD Ryzen Threadripper processors implement improved AMD SenseMI Technology with Precision Boost 2, and Extended Frequency Range 2 (XFR2) delivering the same generational performance uplifts seen on 2nd Gen Ryzen desktop.
All X399 platform customers will have free access to AMD StoreMI Technology enabling configured PCs to load files, games, and applications from a high-capacity hard drive at SSD-like read speeds.
The 32-core, 64-thread AMD Ryzen Threadripper 2990WX is available on August 13, 2018, from global retailers and system integrators.
The 16-core, 32-thread AMD Ryzen Threadripper 2950X processor is expected to launch on August 31, 2018.
AMD Ryzen Threadripper 2970WX and 2920X models will be available in October 2018.
