Equinix to open new data center in Seoul, targeting 5G business

Equinix announced its new data center in Seoul, South Korea, targeting to open in the third quarter of 2019.
Equinix at Oracle OpenWorld 2017This data center called SL1 will provide interconnection and colocation services to businesses in support of their digital transformation initiatives and adoption of cloud. The company did not reveal its investment in the new data center.

The new SL1 IBX data center being located at Sangam, known as Digital Media City will provide 1,680 square meters of colocation space, offering an initial capacity of 550 cabinets in the first phase.

Equinix aims to new business opportunities available with the launch of 5G networks in South Korea in March 2019.

The introduction of 5G will create services and innovations in industries such as Internet of Things (IoT) and Artificial Intelligence (AI) that will require data transactions at higher speeds and volumes, with lower latencies.

Equinix has invested more than $800 million to organically build and expand its presence in the Asia-Pacific region over the past three years. Equinix currently has 40 IBX data centers across 12 markets in Asia-Pacific.

Samuel Lee, president of Equinix Asia-Pacific, said: “Our operations will enable customers to deploy their infrastructure, reach global ecosystem partners and scale their businesses at the digital edge.”
