Are Alibaba Cloud strategies working well for AI demand?

Alibaba Cloud has not generated enough revenue growth during the third-quarter of 2024 despite making significant investment in AI advancements.

Alibaba Cloud business

Alibaba Cloud Intelligence Group reported 7 percent rise in revenue to RMB 29.61 billion ($4.22 billion) in the quarter ending September 30, 2024.

Alibaba Cloud said AI-related products have shown triple-digit growth for the fifth consecutive quarter. The overall revenue growth rate for the Alibaba cloud remains modest, particularly when compared to global competitors experiencing higher cloud adoption rates.

Alibaba Cloud has demonstrated its technological strength, receiving high scores in industry evaluations like The Forrester Wave and Omdia Universe reports. Initiatives like the Qwen 2.5 large model upgrades and cost-efficient AI services reinforce its technical capabilities. However, these advancements have yet to translate into a significant acceleration in revenue growth or global market dominance outside China.

Alibaba’s slower pace of international expansion and relatively modest growth in public cloud adoption, may be hindering Alibaba Cloud from realizing its full potential as a global AI and cloud leader. This raises questions about whether current strategies and investments, particularly in AI, are enough to drive exponential growth in this critical segment of Alibaba’s business.

“Growth in Cloud business accelerated from prior quarters, with revenues from public cloud products growing in double digits and AI-related product revenue delivering triple-digit growth,” Chief Executive Officer Eddie Wu said.

Alibaba’s total revenue was 236.50 billion yuan ($32.72 billion) for the second quarter ended Sept. 30 Alibaba’s international e-commerce revenue rose 29 percent to 31.67 billion yuan or $4,513 million, thanks to growing demand around the world for lower-priced goods from China.

The Forrester Wave: Public Cloud Platforms in China 2024 named Alibaba Cloud a Leader, achieving the highest score in 23 out of 32 criteria.

Ranked first in strategy execution and technical capabilities in the Omdia Universe: Chinese Commercial Foundation Model 2024 report.

Alibaba Cloud released the open-source Qwen 2.5 series, including the flagship Qwen 2.5-72B, which achieved industry-leading benchmarks.

The Qwen models have become a cornerstone of the global open-source ecosystem, with over 70,000 derivative models developed on Hugging Face by September 30, 2024.

Alibaba Cloud has reduced API call rates for Qwen models, making AI technologies more cost-efficient and accessible for a broader customer base.

Alibaba Cloud has also strengthened AI infrastructure with the launch of GPU container services and upgraded AI servers and high-performance network products, improving scalability and efficiency in AI training and inference.

Alibaba Cloud has hosted the 16th annual Apsara Conference 2024, unveiling advanced technologies to enhance cloud and AI capabilities.
