The U.S. Space Force has temporarily suspended the use of web-based generative artificial intelligence (AI) tools, such as ChatGPT, over concerns related to data security, Reuters news report said.
U.S. Space Force has sent a memo — dated September 29 – prohibiting Space Force personnel, referred to as “Guardians,” from utilizing AI tools, including large-language models, on government computers until formal approval is granted by the force’s Chief Technology and Innovation Office.
The pause has been instated due to perceived risks associated with data aggregation linked to the use of generative AI technology. Generative AI, powered by vast language models, has witnessed a surge in usage over the past year, giving rise to innovative products like OpenAI’s ChatGPT. These AI models can rapidly generate content, including text, images, or video, based on simple prompts.
The development reflects significant concerns raised by several countries against the wide spread use of generate AI technology.
Lisa Costa, Chief Technology and Innovation Officer of the Space Force, emphasized in the memo that this technology has the potential to revolutionize the workforce and enhance the ability of Guardians to operate at a higher speed.
The Air Force, in collaboration with the Space Force, confirmed the temporary ban, underscoring that it is a strategic measure to protect service and Guardian data.
“A strategic pause on the use of Generative AI and Large Language Models within the U.S. Space Force has been implemented as we determine the best path forward to integrate these capabilities into Guardians’ roles and the USSF mission,” stated Air Force spokesperson Tanya Downsworth, emphasizing the temporary nature of the restriction.
Lisa Costa detailed in the memo that her office has established a task force focused on generative AI, collaborating with other Pentagon offices to explore responsible and strategic ways to employ this technology.
Additional guidelines regarding the Space Force’s utilization of generative AI will be communicated in the coming month.
