Riyadh Air Partners with IBM to Become the World’s First AI-Native Airline, Boosting Efficiency and Customer Experience

Riyadh Air has taken a major leap in aviation innovation by partnering with IBM to become the world’s first AI-native airline. Announced at IBM Think Riyadh 2025, this collaboration is redefining airline operations by integrating artificial intelligence into every aspect of the business, from employee workflows to passenger experiences.

Unlike traditional carriers built on decades of legacy systems, Riyadh Air was designed from the ground up with AI at its core. Leveraging IBM Consulting’s industry expertise and the IBM watsonx Orchestrate platform, the airline operates as an AI-native enterprise. The project involved orchestrating 59 workstreams and over 60 partners, including Adobe, Apple, FLYR, and Microsoft, ensuring seamless integration of cutting-edge technology into operations.

“With IBM, we’ve stripped out fifty years of legacy in a single stroke,” said Adam Boukadida, Chief Financial Officer of Riyadh Air. “Riyadh Air isn’t just built for today; it’s built for the future, creating a pathway for many airlines to follow in the years to come.”

Reimagining Employee and Guest Experiences with AI

Riyadh Air is transforming how employees and passengers interact in the AI era. The airline has introduced AI-powered solutions across multiple touchpoints:

Employee Experience: A personalized digital workplace with chat-first AI agents simplifies HR workflows and accelerates self-service capabilities as the airline doubles its workforce in the next year.

Crew Enablement: AI-driven mobile applications provide cabin and ground staff with proactive insights, enabling tailored service for passengers, such as fast-track assistance for travelers in a rush.

Customer Care: AI-enabled voice bots and agent assist tools help customer care teams deliver personalized support, anticipating traveler needs to enhance the overall journey.

Operational Efficiency as a Foundation for Innovation

Riyadh Air is designed for efficiency, free from the constraints of legacy systems. IBM Consulting implemented an enterprise performance management suite, consolidating financial, operational, and commercial data. This integration allows Riyadh Air to automate planning, budgeting, and forecasting, delivering real-time insights that optimize route profitability and improve overall business performance.

By embedding AI into its core operations, Riyadh Air is not only enhancing efficiency but also creating new revenue opportunities and reinvesting in innovation across the airline.

Looking Ahead: Expanding Saudi Arabia’s Connectivity

With its first commercial service expected in early 2026, Riyadh Air is poised to transform aviation in Saudi Arabia. The airline aims to connect travelers to over 100 destinations globally by 2030 while delivering a superior, digitally-led travel experience anchored in warm Saudi hospitality.

Mohamad Ali, Senior Vice President of IBM Consulting, said: “By embedding AI into the very foundation of its operations, Riyadh Air is redefining what’s possible in aviation and setting a blueprint for modern, adaptive enterprises.”
