OpenAI has announced the release of its text-to-video artificial intelligence model, Sora, to ChatGPT Plus and Pro users. This marks a significant step in OpenAI’s efforts to advance multimodal AI technologies, challenging similar tools from Meta, Google, and Stability AI.

Sora: Features and Availability
Resolution and Length: Users can generate videos up to 1080p resolution, with durations of up to 20 seconds. Videos can be created in widescreen, vertical, or square formats.
Pricing: Currently available at no additional cost to Plus and Pro users, OpenAI plans to introduce tailored pricing models for diverse user groups in early 2025.
Geographic Access: Sora is available in regions where ChatGPT operates, excluding the EU, UK, and Switzerland.
Launch Restrictions: Uploads of videos featuring people are limited initially, with plans for gradual expansion as deepfake mitigation measures improve.
To address potential misuse, OpenAI has implemented safeguards to block harmful content, including child sexual abuse materials and sexual deepfakes. The company is actively refining its safety protocols to ensure responsible usage.
With the debut of Sora Turbo, OpenAI is positioning itself against competitors like Meta, Alphabet’s Google, and Stability AI, all of which have been exploring text-to-video technologies. Sora’s launch follows its research preview phase, which began in February and was accessible only to safety testers.
