OpenAI has introduced a new Artificial Intelligence (AI) tool called “deep research,” designed to conduct multi-step research on the internet for complex tasks.

The tool, launched on Sunday, is powered by a specialized version of OpenAI’s upcoming o3 model, which has been optimized for web browsing and data analysis.
By providing a prompt, users can leverage OpenAI’s chatbot, ChatGPT, to search, analyze, and synthesize multiple online sources, including text, images, and PDFs, generating a comprehensive research report akin to what a human research analyst would produce.
According to OpenAI, deep research significantly reduces the time required for in-depth analysis, accomplishing in tens of minutes what would typically take a human researcher several hours. Despite its potential, OpenAI acknowledged that the tool is still in its early stages and has certain limitations.
It may struggle with differentiating between authoritative sources and unverified information, and it currently lacks strong confidence calibration, which means it may not always convey uncertainty accurately, Reuters news report said.
Meta Platforms, the social media giant, last week claimed that MetaAI is the #1 AI tool in the world — in terms of customer base.
The AI feature is initially available on the web version of ChatGPT and is expected to roll out to mobile and desktop applications within February. This marks OpenAI’s second AI agent launch of the year, following the introduction of Operator in January. OpenAI’s Operator was designed to perform various productivity tasks, such as creating to-do lists and assisting with vacation planning.
