The program is part of the company’s broader commitment to addressing digital skills gaps across the continent, said Lillian Barnard, President of Microsoft Africa, during the company’s “AI Tour” event in Johannesburg.

Focus on Skills Development Across Sectors

The AI skilling initiative will target a wide range of participants, prioritizing sectors from private companies to government organizations and the nation’s youth. This inclusive approach reflects Microsoft’s goal of equipping diverse groups with the skills needed to thrive in an increasingly digital world.

Barnard emphasized the importance of these efforts, stating:

“By providing skilling opportunities and access to industry-recognized certifications, our youth will be well positioned to compete on the global stage.”

Advancing Digital Transformation

Microsoft has played a significant role in South Africa’s digital transformation. It became the first global “hyperscale” public cloud provider to establish data centers in the country. The company’s investment in AI and cybersecurity training aligns with its broader vision to empower local talent and foster innovation across industries.

Commitment to Africa’s Digital Future

This initiative is part of a larger commitment to train 30 million people across Africa over the next five years. In the past five years, Microsoft has successfully trained 4 million individuals on the continent, demonstrating its dedication to building a digitally skilled workforce.

Driving Economic Growth

The training program aims to enhance employability and competitiveness by offering certifications recognized by industries worldwide. By prioritizing youth participation, Microsoft seeks to position South African talent as key players in the global AI and cybersecurity sectors.

Although Barnard did not disclose the financial investment behind this initiative, the scope and scale underscore Microsoft’s confidence in the transformative potential of AI and cybersecurity expertise for South Africa’s economy and workforce.

Through this initiative, Microsoft aims to bridge the digital divide and create opportunities that support long-term growth and development in South Africa and beyond.
