Google, a subsidiary of Alphabet, has released its AI chatbot app, Gemini, for iOS users on Apple’s App Store, introducing a new voice-based feature called Gemini Live.
This update brings the latest generation of Google’s voice assistant capabilities to iPhone users, allowing them to interact naturally with the chatbot through voice commands. With Gemini Live, users can practice interview responses, brainstorm ideas, or receive travel recommendations via conversation-based interactions, according to Brian Marquardt, a senior director of product management at Google.
Gemini, originally launched in early 2023 as Bard, represents Google’s response to OpenAI’s ChatGPT. It initially debuted on Android devices, and Google has continuously expanded its functionality since, even amid internal restructuring.
Earlier this year, the company laid off hundreds from its Voice Assistant team to streamline resources. Last month, Google merged its Gemini team with DeepMind, its AI research subsidiary, aiming to improve efficiency and accelerate AI advancements.
This release highlights Google’s push to redefine voice assistants with the aid of advanced AI, as large language models continue to make these tools more versatile and responsive than predecessors like Amazon’s Alexa, Apple’s Siri, and the older Google Assistant.
