Worldwide spending on artificial intelligence (AI) is set to reach $2.52 trillion in 2026, marking a significant 44 percent increase compared with 2025, according to Gartner.

The surge in AI investment reflects more than just financial commitment. “AI adoption is fundamentally shaped by the readiness of both human capital and organizational processes, not merely by financial investment,” said John-David Lovelock, Distinguished VP Analyst at Gartner. “Organizations with greater experiential maturity and self-awareness are increasingly prioritizing proven outcomes over speculative potential.”
Key highlights by market segment for 2026 include:
Smaller but growing segments include AI Application Development Platforms ($8.4 billion) and AI Data ($3.1 billion).
AI Infrastructure will lead investment, with $1.37 trillion, representing the largest portion of total AI spending.
AI Services are projected at $588.6 billion, showing strong enterprise demand for consulting, integration, and managed services.
AI Software spending will reach $452.5 billion, driven by enterprise adoption of AI-powered applications.
AI Cybersecurity will more than double to $51.3 billion, reflecting growing concern over AI-related security risks.
AI Models and AI Platforms for Data Science and Machine Learning are expected to see $26.4 billion and $31.1 billion in spending, respectively.
Despite the strong growth in spending, AI is expected to remain in the Trough of Disillusionment throughout 2026. Lovelock noted that AI solutions will most often be delivered to enterprises by incumbent software providers, rather than pursued as part of new, high-risk projects. “The improved predictability of ROI must occur before AI can truly be scaled up by the enterprise,” he explained.
Infrastructure investments will play a major role in the AI spending boom. Building AI foundations alone is expected to drive a 49 percent increase in spending on AI-optimized servers, which will account for 17 percent of total AI expenditure. Additionally, AI infrastructure will contribute an estimated $401 billion in spending, fueled by technology providers developing the underlying platforms necessary for enterprise AI deployment.
As enterprises continue to integrate AI into core operations, the focus is shifting from experimental projects to scalable, outcome-driven solutions. Analysts predict that 2026 will be a pivotal year for AI, as investment accelerates and organizations mature in their approach to this transformative technology.
