Amazon is significantly expanding its artificial intelligence strategy with a planned investment of up to $25 billion in Anthropic, deepening a partnership that could reshape the global AI infrastructure market. The deal includes an immediate $5 billion investment, followed by an additional $20 billion tied to commercial milestones, on top of the $8 billion Amazon has already committed.

As part of the long-term collaboration, Anthropic will spend more than $100 billion over the next decade on Amazon Web Services (AWS), securing massive compute capacity to train and deploy its AI models, including the widely used Claude family. More than 100,000 customers already run Claude models on AWS, making it one of the most popular AI platforms on Amazon Web Services.
The partnership centers on Amazon’s custom AI chips, including Trainium2 and Trainium3, with Anthropic planning to secure up to 5 gigawatts of compute capacity. Future deployments will extend to Trainium4 and beyond, alongside tens of millions of Graviton CPU cores to improve performance and cost efficiency for large-scale AI workloads.
Amazon CEO Andy Jassy highlighted strong demand for its custom silicon, noting that Anthropic’s commitment validates AWS’s progress in AI infrastructure. Meanwhile, Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei emphasized the need for massive infrastructure investment to support rapidly growing demand for generative AI applications.
The collaboration also includes expansion of AI inference capabilities across Asia and Europe, enabling faster global deployment of Claude models. Anthropic will continue to use AWS as its primary cloud provider for mission-critical workloads, reinforcing Amazon’s position as a leading infrastructure provider in the AI race.
Amazon’s aggressive AI spending, expected to reach around $200 billion in capital expenditures this year, underscores its strategy to compete with rivals while monetizing demand for cloud-based AI services. The Anthropic deal follows Amazon’s broader push into AI partnerships, including a previously announced plan to invest up to $50 billion in OpenAI.
Together, Amazon and Anthropic are advancing large-scale AI development through initiatives like Project Rainier, one of the world’s largest AI compute clusters, powered by hundreds of thousands of Trainium chips. The partnership highlights a growing trend where cloud giants and AI startups align to scale infrastructure, accelerate innovation, and capture the next wave of enterprise AI demand.
