Alphabet Cuts Costs of AI Model Gemini to Attract Developers

Alphabet, the parent company of Google, has initiated a significant move to entice developers into its artificial intelligence ecosystem by announcing immediate accessibility to a version of its cutting-edge AI model Gemini. This unveiling is accompanied by a substantial reduction in costs, aiming to bolster developer engagement and innovation.
Google AI model GeminiLast week, Google, an entity under Alphabet’s umbrella, introduced three variants of its highly advanced AI model known as Gemini. This groundbreaking technology possesses the capability to process various data formats, including video, audio, and text, signaling a significant leap in Google’s AI capabilities.

Gemini Pro

Google AI Studio provides a streamlined way for app developers to integrate the Gemini Pro model, which runs in Google data centers. Google is making it easier to leverage the Gemini API directly from the latest preview version of Android Studio with a new AI project template, and the Google AI SDK for Android.

Android AICore & Gemini Nano

AICore is a new system service in Android 14 that enables select devices, starting with Pixel 8 Pro, to run Google’s foundation model Gemini Nano, on-device. AICore handles model management, runtimes, safety features and more, simplifying the work for Android developers.

According to the company, Gemini sets itself apart by demonstrating a heightened capacity for nuanced understanding and sophisticated reasoning compared to its predecessors.

In a bid to make this advanced AI technology more accessible, Alphabet has significantly slashed the cost of Gemini. The revised pricing now stands between half and a quarter of the costs incurred back in June, presenting a substantial cost-saving opportunity for developers.

Furthermore, Alphabet is rolling out a suite of tools tailored for developers to customize their iterations of Gemini. Additionally, the company is set to introduce two new products powered by Gemini in the near future. One of these products will focus on aiding computer programming, while the other will concentrate on enhancing a company’s security operations. Notably, a second iteration of its image-generation model will become available to developers tomorrow.

Alphabet’s Gemini initiative encompasses three versions, each optimized to utilize varying levels of processing power. The most potent version is designed for operation within data centers, while the smallest version is engineered for efficient functioning on mobile devices, catering to diverse developer needs and device capabilities.

This strategic move by Alphabet comes amidst a competitive landscape, particularly since the introduction of OpenAI’s ChatGPT approximately a year ago. Google has been striving to innovate and develop AI software that stands shoulder to shoulder with the advancements introduced by Microsoft-backed OpenAI, vying for prominence and dominance within the AI sphere.
