As organizations accelerate AI adoption, a significant trend emerging is the rise of guardian agents, a class of AI technologies designed to ensure trustworthy, secure, and aligned AI interactions.

According to Gartner, by 2030, guardian agent technologies will comprise 10 percent to 15 percent of the growing agentic AI market, highlighting their role in risk management and operational oversight.
Guardian agents serve dual functions — as assistants that help with content review and monitoring, and as autonomous agents capable of executing or redirecting actions to align with enterprise goals. Their deployment is rapidly growing: a May 2025 Gartner poll of CIOs and IT leaders showed that 28 percent had already deployed some form of AI agents, while 50 percent are experimenting or researching the technology. Another 17 percent plan to adopt it by 2026, signaling a notable shift in enterprise AI strategies and spending priorities.
“Agentic AI will lead to unwanted outcomes if it is not controlled with the right guardrails,” said Avivah Litan, VP Distinguished Analyst at Gartner. “Guardian agents leverage a broad spectrum of agentic AI capabilities and AI-based, deterministic evaluations to oversee and manage the full range of agent capabilities, balancing runtime decision making with risk management.”
Gartner also warns of escalating risks as AI agents gain power and autonomy, such as:
Data poisoning from malicious or misleading sources
Credential hijacking
Agent deviation that could lead to unintended or harmful actions
To address these, organizations are expected to invest more in automated trust, risk, and security controls, fueling demand for guardian agents. These agents function in three critical roles:
Reviewers: Validate AI-generated output for accuracy and compliance
Monitors: Track AI actions in real-time
Protectors: Automatically intervene or block AI behavior when necessary
This evolution aligns with Gartner’s prediction that 70 percent of AI applications will use multi-agent systems by 2028, creating a complex and fast-moving environment where human oversight is no longer sufficient. As a result, AI innovation is increasingly tied to responsible AI spending — with funding directed toward building secure, multi-agent ecosystems supported by guardian agents.
Meanwhile, IDC projects that by 2027, 40 percent of Global 2000 companies will use autonomous AI agents to automate knowledge work. These agents go beyond traditional AI assistants by making decisions, executing actions, and adapting to business objectives. Currently, around 20 percent of enterprise applications include fully autonomous agents, while more than 50 percent incorporate some form of AI assistance. Over 80 percent of companies view agentic AI as the next evolution of enterprise software, driving a shift in application development and investment strategies.
The latest IDC blog on Guardian Agents has identified the need for autonomous oversight systems that ensure AI agents behave in alignment with corporate policy, governance standards, and security protocols. These systems — referred to in industry commentary as guardian agents — are expected to play a key role in securing and regulating enterprise AI deployments.

It autonomously monitors radio access network (RAN) performance, detects anomalies and executes self-healing actions like resource reallocation — all with minimal human intervention to boost 5G resilience and reduce costs.
Alert Enterprise
Guardian AI Security Agent – an autonomous AI agent built into physical security workflows and natively integrated into ServiceNow. It interacts with HR, IT, PACS, visitor management and background check systems to automate tasks like safety training checks, access revocation, mobile credential issuance, anomaly detection, and remediation.
Anecdotes
Policy Guardian – an AI agent launched on Google Cloud aimed at Governance, Risk & Compliance (GRC). It continuously reads company policies, maps them to real-time data systems, identifies compliance gaps (e.g., missing daily database backups), and surfaces actionable alerts.
AIShield
AIShield GuArdIan – a security-focused AI “guardian” layer used by large enterprises to protect internal systems and GenAI chatbots.
