IBM veteran Alok Ohrie to head Dell to improve India IT biz

IBM veteran Alok Ohrie has joined Dell India as the president and managing director.

Alok’s main responsibility will be to drive growth in India, develop and deliver solutions for global and Indian clients, state and local governments and the consumer business.

In the first quarter of 2013, Dell’s market share in the Indian PC market was 13.8 percent.

Dell is well behind HP. With 22.5 percent share, Dell’s main rival HP consolidated its position as the number one PC vendor in the Indian market in the January-March quarter, IDC said earlier. The overall PC market in the first quarter stood at 2.71 million units, up 7.5 percent over the preceeding three months and about 3 percent over the year-ago period. The growth was primarily led by the commercial PC market, which was subdued in the last couple of quarters.

Alok is joining Dell India at a time when the IT deployments are going through a slow pace.

Last month, Dell said that its end user computing revenue declined 9 percent to $8.9 billion in the first quarter of fiscal 2014. The company’s end user computing business mainly includes Dell PCs and laptops. Dell’s operating income in user computing business for the quarter was $224 million, a 65 percent decrease.

Alok will replace Sameer Garde.

Sameer Garde, who previously led the Dell India Commercial business, has moved on to pursue career opportunities outside of the company.

Recently, Dell CEO said India is an important market for the PC maker and IT solutions provider.

Due to overall slowdown globally, Dell’s total revenue declined 2 percent to $14.1 billion from the previous year. Dell’s net income plummeted 51 percent to $372 million.

Its enterprise solutions group revenue increased 10 percent to $3.1 billion. Operating income was $136 million, a 71 percent increase. Dell server and networking revenue increased 16 percent as the company gained share in the calendar first quarter. Dell networking rose 24 percent, including a 46 percent growth in the company’s Force10 business. Dell storage revenue declined 10 percent.

Dell does not disclose India specific revenues.

Before joining Dell India, Alok led IBM’s Systems and Technology Group in India from January 2010.

Alok and his team strategically grew the business and developed a strong reputation for developing server, storage, networking and systems software solutions for their enterprise, SMB, government & public sector customers.

Prior to joining IBM, he was president of EMC India and SAARC region and also worked for AMD as vice president of Business Development and Managing Director of India.

He had a prior stint at IBM which spanned over 13 years in various leadership roles and also at Wipro Infotech for four years.
