Today, Amazon has initiated the beta launch of Rufus, initially accessible to a limited subset of customers through the Amazon mobile app. The rollout is expected to progressively reach additional U.S. customers in the coming weeks.

For over 25 years, Amazon has been at the forefront of utilizing AI technologies to elevate customer experiences. Notable instances include personalized recommendations, efficient fulfillment center operations, drone deliveries, conversational capabilities of Alexa, and the revolutionary checkout-free Amazon Go stores. The introduction of Rufus is another significant step in Amazon’s commitment to integrating generative AI into various aspects of customer interactions.

In the past year, Amazon has introduced several generative AI-powered features to simplify and enhance the shopping experience. AI-generated review highlights provide customers with concise insights from numerous reviews, aiding quick comprehension of customer feedback.

The recently launched Fit Review Highlights offer personalized size guidance based on generative AI, assisting customers in selecting the right size. Furthermore, generative AI is employed to enhance product listings by helping selling partners create more engaging titles and descriptions.

Building upon these AI-driven innovations, Amazon is now unveiling Rufus, a generative AI-powered expert shopping assistant. Trained on Amazon’s extensive product database, customer reviews, community Q&As, and external web information, Rufus excels in answering a variety of customer queries, providing product comparisons, and offering personalized recommendations based on contextual conversations.

Rufus empowers customers to conduct broad research at the onset of their shopping journey, make comparisons between products, and ask specific questions about product durability. The AI assistant seamlessly integrates into the Amazon shopping experience, making it easier for customers to find and discover the best products tailored to their needs.

Rufus is currently in beta and will be rolled out to customers gradually, starting with a select group in the U.S. accessing the mobile app. Customers can utilize Rufus to learn about product categories, shop by occasion or purpose, compare product categories, and receive tailored recommendations. The AI assistant can also provide specific product information while on a product detail page.

Customers engaging with Rufus are encouraged to provide feedback through rating responses and offering freeform comments. Amazon acknowledges that while it is still early days for generative AI, continuous improvements will be made to fine-tune responses and enhance Rufus’ overall helpfulness over time.

To experience the beta version of Rufus, customers can update their Amazon Shopping app and start utilizing the AI-powered assistant by typing or speaking their questions into the search bar. The Rufus chat dialog box will then appear at the bottom of the screen, providing answers and facilitating a more interactive shopping experience for users.
