India on top in phishing attack among APAC countries, loses $225mn in 2013

India has emerged as the top nation in APAC in terms of phishing attack by volume, with estimated loss of $225 million from these attacks in 2013, says a new research from RSA, the security division of EMC.

Australia and China stood in the second and third respectively.

India stood fourth globally in third quarter 2013 phishing report  from RSA. India received 3 percent of attacks during that period.

phishingGlobally, USA and Canada remained the most targeted countries by phishing attacks in 2013 with a total of 63 percent of the phishing attacks directed at them.  Loss due to phishing attack was close to $5.9 billion which is significantly higher than $1.5billion loss in 2012.

The total number of phishing attacks in 2013 stood at 448,126 as against 445,004 the previous year.

Brands in the U.S., UK, India and Canada were targeted by almost 57 percent of phishing attacks in the first half of 2013, the report said.

Top ten countries in the order of the severity of attacks are: United States, United Kingdom, Germany, India, South Africa, Canada, Netherlands, Colombia, Australia and Brazil.

There has been sequential rise in phishing attacks in every quarter in 2013, with Q4 seeing the most number of attacks.

RSA expects a slight decline in phishing volumes, mainly due to the growing adoption of email authentication, namely DMARC, as well as strict security measures adopted by companies.

According to the research agency, big data analytics and broader intelligence collection will lead to faster detection and quicker mitigation, resulting in lower financial losses. Deploying analytics into detection and applying broader intelligence help prevent these attacks.

The growing cyber awareness will also help reduce phishing. More awareness translates directly into fewer losses, RSA said.
